Is there anything that Nigel Romick can’t do?
While you may be used to seeing Romick on the field, playing as a defensive lineman for the Ottawa REDBLACKs, on the side lines he is a dedicated and passionate firefighter.
This year, Romick is celebrating 10 years with the Ottawa REDBLACKS, and is the last remaining player from the original REDBLACKS lineup from the 2014 Canadian Football League season. He is also celebrating four years of service with the Ottawa Fire Department.
A proud CAA Member, Romick’s story is one of passion and commitment, which shines through both on the field with the Ottawa REDBLACKS and at the fire station.
An unexpected journey into firefighting
Romick’s journey into firefighting kicked off during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the lack of a football season left him searching for new challenges. “That year, firefighting came into my life, and I’ve absolutely fallen in love with it since,” he shares with a smile. Fast forward to today, and it has become a vital part of his life, beautifully complementing his athletic career.
For Romick, the attraction of firefighting is all about the familiar team dynamics. “The group atmosphere in firefighting feels a lot like what I experienced playing football,” Romick said. “It has that dynamic of teamwork.”
Denny Charbonneau, Captain at Ottawa Fire Station 53, can’t say enough good things about Romick’s impact on their crew.
“Having Nigel around is fantastic. He really gets the team-bonding vibe – the jokes, the fun, and, most importantly, the hard work,” Captain Charbonneau said. “He’s the kind of person you want by your side when things get tough.”
Balancing the field and the firehouse
Romick’s dual career keeps him busy, with weekends dedicated to football and his family, and Monday nights reserved for firefighter training. It’s a demanding schedule, but one he embraces wholeheartedly. “It’s strenuous, but I love it,” he shares. “The camaraderie with the guys and girls is fantastic.”
A career as a professional football player has made Romick a valuable addition to the team at Station 53. Romick’s brute strength and teamwork are part of what makes him a good fireman. “When we need to break down a door or handle tough situations, he’s the guy we rely on,” Captain Charbonneau notes.
A future beyond football
As a 10-year REDBLACKS veteran, Romick is already focused on his future. “Once my playing days are over, I look forward to possibly pursuing a full-time career in firefighting,“ he shares. His dedication to serving the community will endure long after he leaves playing professional sports behind.
