Zipping down a bike trail is a great way to spend a summer afternoon. After two years of day trips and hiking around Ontario, many of us have realized that our province is more beautiful than we imagined.
Why not try bikepacking, the latest trend for outdoor adventure enthusiasts? This may be the summer to explore Ontario’s incredible bike routes. Zig-zag from the Quebec border, through Algonquin Park and along our rivers and lakeshores.
What is bikepacking?
Bikepacking is just like backpacking but with only the bare necessities. Your gear must be light enough to be loaded onto your bike and allow you to still maneuver the trails.
Choose the right bike
It’s important to find the right bike to suit your needs. For bikepacking, opt for one with lower gear ratios and multiple mounts for your equipment as well as a durable but light frame.
Off-road hybrid bikes have evolved to include new technology like hydraulic disc brakes, a more upright frame and chain bracket that keeps debris clear. The result is a gravel bike, perfect for touring mountain valleys and rough terrain. Some even come with luggage racks for bikepacking, commuting or blasting down Ottawa’s Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway on NCC Sunday Bike Days with the kids.
What to bring with you
Make sure to pack the essentials—bike bags, maps, water, snacks, a spare inner tube and your CAA Everyday* Membership, which includes CAA Bike Assist** for roadside emergencies.
Also consider some wearable tech. There are fitness trackers that sync with third-party apps that include maps, GPS and more.
Make sure you also download the CAA Mobile App™. It saves your Membership right to your phone so you can take advantage of Member-exclusive discounts at places to eat or shop along the way.
